Walt Whitman – Leaves of Grass – Calamus – 1855 – translated from English into Italian by Enzo Martinelli

That Shadow My Likeness

That shadow my likeness that goes to and fro seeking a livelihood,
chattering, chaffering,
How often I find myself standing and looking at it where it flits,
How often I question and doubt whether that is really me;
But among my lovers and caroling these songs,
O I never doubt whether that is really me.

Quell’ombra del mio sembiante che ondeggia alla ricerca di sussistenza,
chiacchierando, frugando,
Quante volte mi trovo in piedi e guardo dove fluttua,
Quante volte mi chiedo e dubito che sia davvero io;
Ma tra i miei amanti e canticchiando queste canzoni,
O non dubito mai che sia davvero io.
