One of the subjects that always caught my attention as a beginning photographer was churches and, in general, places of worship. The architecture of the churches, especially the Gothic ones, is of great appeal to those who attend them in terms of their relationship with the divine and supernatural dimension. The large vaults that lift us to the sky and the stained glass windows that magically reflect the sun’s rays inside the temples are visual stimuli for a spiritual experience, even simply in the perception of the human eye. The reproduction of these mystical sensations even with photographic images is one of my sources of inspiration when I am away from home in search of new photos.
Perhaps because of a similar tendency towards a heavenly and spiritual dimension, skyscraper images appeal to me. London in recent decades has developed a skyline of modern and innovative architecture that is unmatched in other cities around the world. The boldly shaped new buildings of the City and the Docklands are undoubtedly an inexhaustible source of photographic attention at any time of day. For the time being skyscraper construction is being allowed only in a couple of areas around London and their concentration in limited and intensively built districts, while the rest of the metropolis is not build with high-rising buildings, makes their impact even more dramatic.
I regularly attend concerts, so the visual dimension of public places dedicated to music production is an essential part of the experience of listening to live music. The visual harmony of a concert hall and its acoustics contribute and amplify the listening pleasure and emotions of a live show. Older theatres were built having in mind also their social function as a place where to exhibit your social status and your relationship with the rest of society. These days such considerations are no longer a determining factor in the architectural design of concert places where the primary role is just played by functionality as places to enjoy music.
