In 1908 Claude Monet spent some time in Venice and painted various views of the city which are amongst the most iconic pictures of the Italian city. As it was his habit on favourite subjects he would paint the same scene several times at different times of the day and with different light effects. Of this particular view of the church of Salute across the Grand Canal there are at least six paintings where the painter was focusing his attention on the effects of light on the water. Although the scene is undoubtedly a very specific view of the city Monet seems to be preoccupied by the atmospheric combination of colours and the contrast between the relatively detailed foreground with the mooring poles and the church architecture on the background. The famous gondolas populating the canal are just minor dark spots and shadows on the bottom left and there is no sign of human life whatsoever. Indeed a very unique perception of the busiest and most vibrant place in Venice.
An interesting comparison can be drawn with another famous painting by Monet, Impression, Sunrise, which was created some 30 years earlier and was the revolutionary springboard for the impressionist movement, followed by so many other painters at the end of the nineteenth century.
