Colour Study, Squares with Concentric Circles, by Kandinsky, 1913, Munich, The Stรคdtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง With abstract art colour combination is essential to express dynamic and contrasting ideas so Kandinsky devoted some regular study on colour and shape as a basis for his more complex paintings. It is interesting that his colour studies have with time become almost as interesting as his proper paintings. Here are a couple of iconic examples of watercolour studies by Kandinsky that have become points of reference for abstract painters and students as a way to grasp the building blocks of his creative genius. We can notice these concentric patterns also as decorative elements on his tie in one of his self portraits. An example easy to follow if we want to experiment with colours and shapes ourselves.
