Marking the 278th anniversary of Antonio Vivaldi’s death on 28/7/1741
🇬🇧Antonio Vivaldi’s music is indissolubly associated in my mind with Venice and its amazing views across the lagoon. Indeed Vivaldi spent most of his life in Venice, although his fame spread across Europe during his lifetime and, in a weird twist of fate, he died in Vienna in poverty in 1741 after he failed to get an appointment as court musician there. For a long time Vivaldi was associated with the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice, an institution for abandoned children, where he worked as priest and musician, composing and performing for the resident all-female ensemble there.
The oil painting below is an anonymous portrait, mostly associated with Antonio Vivaldi, also known as the Red Priest, here depicted wearing scarlet red clothes. In reality his nickname was most probably due to the colour of his hair, a characteristic family trait. There are only three images linked to Vivaldi and realised during his lifetime, all of them in this post. The painting is attributed to him for the resemblance to the engraving above, cover of the first edition of the Four Season’s score, his most famous composition.
One of Vivaldi’s greatest gift was to create amazing musical depictions with impressive dramatic effect. This thirds movement of his Summer concerto is the most emphatic rendition of a violent summer storm, in the Youtube video below the interpretation by violinist Joshua Bell.
My favourite interpretation of Vivaldi’s most famous composition is the legendary recording of Herbert von Karajan conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker, still available now in download.
🇮🇹 La musica di Antonio Vivaldi è indissolubilmente associata nella mia mente a Venezia e ai suoi meravigliosi panorami sulla laguna. In effetti Vivaldi trascorse la maggior parte della sua vita a Venezia, sebbene la sua fama si diffuse in tutta Europa durante la sua vita e, per uno strano scherzo del destino, morì a Vienna in povertà nel 1741 dopo che non riuscì a ottenere un appuntamento come musicista di corte lì. Vivaldi è stato a lungo associato all’Ospedale della Pietà di Venezia, istituto per bambini abbandonati, dove aveva lavorato come sacerdote e musicista, componendo ed esibendosi per l’ensemble residente tutto al femminile.
In alto, un ritratto anonimo, per lo più associato ad Antonio Vivaldi, detto anche il prete rosso, qui raffigurato con indosso abiti rosso scarlatto. In realtà il suo soprannome era molto probabilmente dovuto al colore dei suoi capelli, un tratto caratteristico della famiglia. Sono solo tre le immagini legate a Vivaldi realizzate durante la sua vita, tutte incluse in questo post. Il ritratto gli viene attribuito per la somiglianza con l’incisione della copertina della prima edizione della partitura delle Quattro Stagioni, la sua composizione più famosa.
Uno dei più grandi doni di Vivaldi è stato quello di creare incredibili rappresentazioni musicali con un effetto drammatico impressionante. Questo terzo movimento del suo concerto delle Quattro Stagioni – L’estate è la resa più enfatica di un violento temporale estivo, nel video Youtube incluso l’interpretazione del violinista Joshua Bell.
